Like many other radios of its class the IC-7300 has an internal antenna tuner and contains an internal audio card accessible over USB. This allows the radio to be used for popular digital modes such as PSK31, Winlink, and FT8.

Antenna Efficiency

The FMJ, HexTenna, and also the Alpha Loop all have the best HF antenna DX and NVS signal patterns. The most efficient and largest antenna is the HexTenna antenna. This antenna requires you shorten or lengthen the Telescopic Elements with Tuning from one band to another.

If your goal is to be able to work multiple bands from a single antenna, then you probably need an antenna tuner. If you need to resolve bandwidth issues on an antenna tuned for a specific frequency, then you may need or want an antenna tuner.

Tuning your antenna is mandatory if you want acceptable CB performance. Not tuning your antenna will result in poor transmission and reception performance, and can also result in permanent damage to your radio. You'll need an SWR meter (available for around $25) in order to tune your antenna.

The Icom 7300 microphone that's included with the radio gets great audio reports, but I can't use a hand mic while contesting or running a net.
